At the same bike shop I also found a cargo rack that mounted over the rear tire. Next came a homemade bow rack consisting of a piece of aluminum tubing, purchased at a hardware store and a set of bow/gun holders designed to mount on an ATV rack or handlebars. To make the bow rack I attached the piece of aluminum tubing crossways at the farthest rearward portion of the cargo rack, using nuts and bolts, and then mounted the ATV bow/gun holder to that. It worked like a charm, and I was soon making it silently to my stand in a third of the time that it’d have taken me to walk.
The first order of business: Lose all the shine. After removing all the decals, I lightly sanded the finish and wiped the bike down thoroughly with acetone; then, every surface from which light could reflect was covered with olive-drab spray paint. My ride looked cooler already.
Best known for their chocolate, watches and banks, the Swiss are also quite skilled bicycle makers as it turns out. If the BMC + Lamborghini collaboration wasn’t proof enough, see Stromer and new ST1 pedal-assisted electric bicycle. Now available for the first time stateside, the highly engineered electric bicycle resembles more of a city cruiser than the moped-looking bikes your delivery man rides—a design shift we’re more than pleased with. By leaning more toward a traditional frame geometry and monochrome colorway the new ST1 e-bike stands to go relatively unnoticed on the street—until it’s flying past the pack at up to 33 MPH that is.
As these fat tire bikes have showed up at hunting shows over the last year, I have viewed them more with curiosity than anything, but I as I considered how they might fit into my bowhunting, I am about to take the plunge. I bowhunt whitetails on public land in several states each year, and that often involves getting way back into a property to get away from the crowds. For example, I have found a location where I have killed a couple https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_bicycle mature bucks on public land in Kansas, but it’s a walk of more than 1.5 miles. That’s a long haul before daylight and after dark. Once I shoot a big buck back in there, the distance seems to become even longer.
eBay determines trending price through a machine learned model of the product’s sale prices within the last 90 days. “New” refers to a brand-new, unused, unopened, undamaged item, and “Used” refers to an item that has been used previously.
So there were a few things happening last weekend but don’t think for a second that we didn’t notice this little milestone – 3000 Page Likes is brilliant – thanks to everyone that contributes to and supports our humble little Mountain Bike club 😎🤗
During an afternoon hunt, I’d followed my customary practice and stashed my bike in some brush. With just a few minutes of daylight left, I saw a coyote approaching over my right shoulder, just trotting along at first. Suddenly it crossed the path that my bike’s doe-urine-anointed tires had rolled down as I rode in. Immediately picking up the olfactory cue, it crouched low to ground and began belly-crawling towards my bike, stopping to sniff each spot of deer scent left by the rubber. It stalked right up to the brushpile, and I believe that it fully expected to see a young doe bedded there.
The scabbard is both awesome and frustrating. Forever I have been just slinging the 12 gauge over my back. The first time I put the gun on the scabbard was freeing. It felt so good to get that blasted thing off my back and on the bike.

Rick has been designing and fabricating beautiful and unique steel frames since the early 90’s. He builds every frame himself, with the same focus and simplicity that he started with since the early days. From his small shop outside of Santa Cruz, each frame is brought to life and then cheerfully passed to it’s owner with a fond appreciation for the adventures that await.
Of course, a bike simplifies pre-season scouting as well. One of my favorite deer-related activities is a last-minute “speed-scouting” venture undertaken about a week before the season starts. I quickly beat a path across the property, checking cameras, surveying acorn crops, and looking for bucks’ hoof prints at creek crossings. My feeling is that the less time I spend in the woods scouting, the less likely I’ll be to spook deer. Scouting by bike allows me to accomplish in a few hours what might take days to do on foot.
Pedaling a bike uphill, even a slight uphill, can quickly raise heart rates and make out-of-shape muscles sore. On steeper hills, pushing the loaded bike gives an ample workout. Sitting on a seat, even downhill, can be a pain all its own. I’ve always worked at staying in some kind of shape, and once I started mountain biking for elk I had even more reason. I ride a quality exercise bike at home for 25 minutes every other day year-round and use a heart rate monitor to get my heart into the target heart zone: 110-125 beats per minute for a 61-year old guy.
The Pacific Northwest is home to hundreds of thousands of acres of managed forest lands, many of which are owned by private timber companies that were founded on the rich timber resources that blanket this region. This fertile land is also prime habitat and home to Roosevelt elk, black bear, Columbian black-tailed deer, cougars, and many other species pursued annually by hunters. State forest lands, BLM & DNR lands, and plain old private lands are intermixed throughout and can be pinpointed on various maps. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is the best resource for determining land ownership, but this information can also be obtained via state/county resources and by calling timber companies, provided you have adequate Lat/Lon or other description data available.

2006 Specialized Hardrock Comp hardtail. I don’t like rear suspension because I feel it robs energy that I want transferred to the ground when I pedal. I use conventional toe-clips to accommodate my hunting footwear. The tires are 2.20″ for extra load distribution. I also have TopPeak front fender to keep mud and water out of my face.
