At the other end of the spectrum, a bike can be used purposely to lay down a scent trail. Try pouring your favorite estrous-doe urine into a small pump-spray bottle and spraying it onto a small spot on a tire. Every time that tire goes around it leaves an olfactory footprint just like a hot doe’s.

2006 Specialized Hardrock Comp hardtail. I don’t like rear suspension because I feel it robs energy that I want transferred to the ground when I pedal. I use conventional toe-clips to accommodate my hunting footwear. The tires are 2.20″ for extra load distribution. I also have TopPeak front fender to keep mud and water out of my face.

An unpressured deer is a different animal: It moves around throughout the day, relaxed and casual in its movements. It strolls into open areas during daylight without even considering that it might need to look up into trees to check for humans.

My hunting partner and I have used our bikes for many years to hunt Washington and Oregon’s coastal mountains. Over the years we’ve used various types of bow racks, lights, and basically continue to evolve our set-ups to serve our needs best. Several years ago, my partner Stan added pannier racks to his bike in order to not only carry more gear and meat, but also as a means to reduce his hunting pack weight by stowing game bags, etc in them. This way he had them if he got an elk down but wasn’t carrying them around day in and day out on his back. Instead he was able to keep his pack lean with essentials only, then return to his bike for field care tools.

Keep in mind that where I hunt in Minnesota it is legal to have your gun uncased and loaded while riding a bike. I have certainly toyed with the idea of having an ATV style rack on the handlebars, but that means I can not travel tight twisty trails and I do like the fact that the upright scabbard allows for quick handling.

A number of things can make hunting from bikes successful and downright fun. To start, get in shape. We see hunters bring a bike on opening morning, ride it for a few hours, take it back to the pickup and not ride it the rest of the season, because their leg and butt muscles hurt so much.

Standard fork: Thursday has had pretty good luck with White Brothers and Marzocchi. The prototype had a White Brothers Magic 120. It looks as if the new “Stage” model will clear a 3-inch tire, so I’ll give that a shot. Thursday gets a pretty decent price from White Brothers/MRP, so he can pass on some savings here.

I bought this go-kart for my daughters about a year and a half ago or maybe it was 2-1/2 years ago who knows. It sits in our garage and has barely been used. Its a constant source of headache and I wish I could go back in time and convince myself to NOT buy this go-kart. I HATE when my kids want to use it because just as the case today, I couldn’t get the thing to start. If there was a way I knew to lemon law it,..simply return it for a refund, I would do so. It has so many problems that they never seem to end. It would start OK when we had just purchased the go-kart but you always had to have someone sitting behind the wheel pushing on the accelerator or the engine would die,…no idling with this go-kart without it dying. Also, the right rear tire has never held air long. I think the recommended age for this go-kart is 14+ but it is really designed for about an 8 year old. While the kart has knobby tires indicating it could travel off road, my daughter who was 7 at the time and 42lbs could not drive it off road up a moderate incline in the grass without needing one of us to push. And while the go-kart will pull my 12 year old on pavement, at 5’3″ she can barely fit into the go-kart with the seat all the way back. The turning on the go-kart is very poor, the right front tire is almost bald because the other front tire doesn’t touch the ground and I called the company about these problems and to their credit, even though they told me it was past the 90 day limit they did send me a replacement for the tire that goes flat but they then told me I’d have to find an engine shop and pay to have the tire put on. They also told me to go on their website and follow videos to clean out the carburetor which might help with the engine failing and terrible power. I might be able to change my car’s tire but I am not a mechanic and the company needs to do more than send a piece of junk to me and expect me to fix it. I hate the disappointed look in my kid’s eyes.

I mentioned toe clips at the beginning. Toe clips are straps designed to provide more power pedaling uphill, allowing me to push forward and lift with one foot while the other is pushing down on each stroke. The key is to remember to pull the boot backward out of the clip before putting the foot down on the ground. It won’t come out sideways, and if you try, you’ll fall. Adding big pedals with serrations allow muddy boots to grab easily.  A modification to make getting in and out of the pedals easier is to leave the fabric strap that surrounds the boot off the toe clips.  You gain a good portion of the power but don’t have to worry about getting the boot out of the pedal.

The meld of biking and hunting is interesting to us and perhaps timely. Ostensibly, the Cogburn bike is an alternative to an ATV. There’s a movement of a younger demographic of hunters that may find a non-motorized option appealing.

The CB4 frame has attachment points for 1, 2, or 3 standard water bottle cage mounts, depending on the space available on each frame size (larger frames have more bottle mounts, smaller ones have less). The fork has 2 mid-blade mounts and 2 sets of triple-boss attachment points, one on each leg, for oversize cages on the fork to expand carrying capacity for water, stove fuel, sleeping pads and other gear.

Bikes can be surprisingly stealthy contraptions. One day a couple of years ago, I was riding back to my truck after a morning hunt. As I got within sight of the vehicle, I saw that my hunting buddy had made it back before me. Although I wasn’t trying to be especially quiet, I was able to ride right up behind him without him even knowing I was there. He nearly jumped out of his skin when I skidded to a stop!
